< Return to Home Shirley MA: Small Town America at Play
The first two screens show our town. We have captured kids and adults, town officials, and members of our American Legion, all at play. In Shirley we still play the old fashioned way, with few props, and a lot of laughs. There is no greater music than children laughing, and so that is what we gave you.

I vote for Shirley. They love to play.

Beth commented 11/26/2007

I vote for this one!!!! It is absolutely the best. I think $25,000 will actually make a real difference in a town like Shirley. Please take the time to vote.
Small town America is counting on you!

SammieB commented 11/27/2007

I vote for this one too!!! You can see that this town is very playful!

Tiggerr commented 11/27/2007

The street we live on in Shirley had a "reunion" which included the moms and dads and children who "played together" . The moms and dads are grandparents now and the children have their own children. We all have wonderful memories of raising our children in Shirley. Our children talked about walking to the local variety store with just 25 cents in their pocket and filling a small brown paper bag with candy; playing a pick up game of baseball in the backyard; and in the summer their parents telling them "Come in when the street lights go out !" Twenty five thousand dollars will help build wonderful memories for the grandparents, moms, dads and children. I vote for Shirley!!!

Lindsay commented 11/29/2007

Best of Luck Shirley! I vote for you as I had one of my all time favorite sledding experiences in your wonderful town!!! In fact I seem to recall I even made the front page of the local news :) Go get em - you deserve it!

Davs commented 12/01/2007

Play is an integral part of a child's growth. We at Wonderful World of Children know what play does for our school friends and wish this could happen for all of Shirley's children and families. Being a Playful City will contribute to strong bodies, minds, and spirits. A special thanks to Sue and all who contributed to this effort.

kathodell commented 12/02/2007

Shirley gets my vote. We have the most playful children at LAW and the children would really enjoy a new playground. Play is crucial to learning!

I love Shirley! All my kids love it too. The town of Shirley really knows how to have fun. We need a playground for all to enjoy.

Fay commented 12/03/2007

If ever there was a town deserving of the title "PLAYFUL CITY" Shirley is. I strongly support this video and all the efforts being made on behalf of our community. Play is an essential element in building not only strong bodies but minds as well.

Shirley got my vote, and Kelly Neelon should run for mayor! :-)

SusanLee commented 12/04/2007

Shirley has the players - and Lura White School could certainly make good use of a new playground. A healthy body ensures a healthy mind. My vote is for Shirley - the little town that could.

Every kid should have a playground!

KerryC commented 12/05/2007

Lived in Shirley all my life! Now raising my boys here and yes they definately need a playground! I vote for Shirley all the way!

robint commented 12/05/2007

I grew up in Shirley, and the same playgrounds are being used with lots of the same old equipment I grew up on. We need a safe, new play space! My children would love to play with other Shirley children on the same playground! A community that plays together stays together! Go Shirley!!

lodestone commented 12/05/2007

Like a lodestone, Shirley has magnetic and attractive qualities, one of the greatest being the playfulness of the strong community. Our family of six simply can't fit all of the play opportunities into our schedule! From performing arts, hoe downs, and Days of Play, to our Spring Sprint, teddy bear picnics, DI teams, sports/recreation, there is certainly no lack of activities. A local playground to visit on our own time with friends -possibly within walking distance- would complement these activities perfectly! A place that parents/teenagers/babysitters could play with the younger children. Please vote for us!

pollygarden commented 12/06/2007

PaulaH I have raised 3 children in Shirley & Now have 3 grandchildren . We have had the same playgrounds for 45 years of my childrens lives. I would like to see a new playground for my great grandchildren. My husband grew up in Shirley & they still have the same playground. We would love to have a up dated new playground for the children of Shirley. Shirley is a great place to raise children. "GO SHIRLEY"

geddylee commented 12/06/2007

Whoa! Shirley looks like a great place to play!
They deserve a new playground . Look how much fun everyone is having.
Shirley Rocks!!!!

lona3185 commented 12/06/2007

The town of Shirley reminds me of the town I grew up in PA...and the children's laughter brings back tons of memories. What I see in this video....A TOWN THAT PLAYS TOGETHER, STAYS TOGETHER...and the adults have just as much fun as the children.
I certainly vote for Shirley for the Community Playground. I can see these children growing into well balanced responsible respectful adults with the help of their parents, grandparents and neighbors influence and example.
Wish I could travel up there to visit my neice and husband and children, but Florida is a long way away.
I cast my vote for Shirley.

grandmajudy commented 12/07/2007

Having 4 very active grandchildren in the lovely town of Shirley, I voted for a playground which would be a place I could go with them and enjoy watching them have the healthy kind of fun I grew up with in the '40s and '50s - before computers and video games.. Memories are forever!

neese commented 12/07/2007

Shirley gets our vote!! The Richards Clan

Psycha commented 12/07/2007

Shirley really could use a new play area! I have lived here for 6 years and I cant picture living anywhere else. My 5 yr old has made some wonderful friends and just loves running around and playing outdoors. We live on a very busy street so he can only play in our back yard because the old playground is in DIRE need of repair. I would love to have a nice new safe play area that all the kids can run and have fun and enjoy all the wonderful weather from snowball fights to just the heat of the summer! I vote for Shirley!

ESL commented 12/07/2007

Linda

The children of Shirley deserve to have a new play area. My stepdaughter and her family have worked hard to make the Shirley schools better. Now it is time to play.

fourboys commented 12/11/2007

I love the wave done at a public meeting! That goes to show EVERYONE in Shirley can play and have a good time. However, we need a new, safe playground for our old, historic town filled with children. Don't overlook Shirley because we are small. That is the reason we need a lot of votes. Big cities get grants all the time. It is time for the small town to get it. I love Shirley!!

KentH commented 12/13/2007

Your message of "small town at play" really comes across to me. Wish I could vote more than once.

StephieDoodles commented 12/19/2007

I voted for Shirley!!!! My litte cousin needs a place to play.

slappy commented 12/19/2007

I voted for Shirley. I moved here 4 years ago and truly feel sorry for the people that will never know whats it's like to be small enough to really care about the others in your town or city. Small towns like Shirley represent a place and a time that used to be the norm, not the exception., a place most people grew up in. Like our Town, our budget is small, but no town is more committed to providing our children and community the social advantages of Family Fun,

JoyTom commented 12/19/2007

I vote for Shirley because my new baby boy will need a place to play as he grows up.

Richard_S commented 12/19/2007

GoRedSox commented 12/20/2007

I don't live in Shirley, but I live nearby, and these kids really need this playground. This is very important to them and the community. Congrats to those who worked on this and got the Boston Globe to publish a story. It shows amazing dedication to your kids and your community.

grandmama commented 12/21/2007

I have 4 grandchidlren in Shirley two of whom attend the Lura White. I have seen children wait a long time for a turn on their current equipment. My own town of 55,000 just constructed a new playgournd at one of the schools with modern, safe equipment. I hope Shirley wins since a small town has more limited resources.

suemarielee commented 12/21/2007

Shirley needs this playground - it's a small town - much smaller than El Paso. I'm afraid the competition may be too great. Are their any contingent plans? Now that other communities know about it (I'm from a town about 45 minutes southeast of Shirley) maybe a fundraising drive is in order.

YOYOYO commented 12/21/2007

I LOVE THE PLAYFUL SPIRIT OF THE TOWN OF SHIRLEY
MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS YOYOYO

CLH commented 12/21/2007

I've never been in a town where there are so many generations of families still living here. People enjoy the community so much that most of them grow up and then raise their own children here. We enjoy all our kids and we want a playground to keep our little ones safe.

chippymv commented 12/21/2007

To all those who voted, we thank you. To all those who supported our efforts in so many ways, we thank you. To Sue, and the members of the Play Board of Shirley, thank you, thank you, thank you.... To the good people of Kaboom- hats off to your mission- a playground within walking distance of every child in America is a worthy, and a playful cause. If it all ends tonight, and Shirley progresses no further, it was still worth the ride. People are talking, and that alone is forward progress.

Mel68AHS commented 12/21/2007

I grew up in Shirley - love it then and still do. Here's my vote---hope I'm not too late.
