It's time for the citizens of Portsmouth to come together and support their friends and neighbors. This is great that someone has taken the time to apply for a grant to help with our area playgrounds. Obesity is becoming a real health problem for the youth of our country. By offering opportunities for families to get out and exercise on area playgrounds will help combat issues related to obesity such as diabetes and heart disease. Come on Portsmouth...Get moving!!!

Portsmouth tries its best to provide for its citizens. Being pro-active like this just shows that the people in charge really do care and would like to better the community. Sometimes it takes a little work from us to be responsible for our own neighborhoods. I think its a shame that more citizens don't take advantage of the beautiful parks that the city does have. I think this is a great initiative as long as we support it, we will see some great things come of it.

Way to play Portsmouth!!! It's good to see our City Employees taking time out of their busy day to have some fun an enjoy this beautiful city we live in! We are lucky to have so many areas to play in, and I am really hoping that we can improve our downtown playgrounds, as they are frequented by several daycare centers and Head Starts and new play equipment would most certainly add to the fun! Play On Portsmouth!!!!!!!!

Portsmouth is a great place to live...having lived in places across the country and grown up in a large city, I can honestly say this is my favorite place I've ever lived. Like many small towns, there are challenges, but compared to 8 years ago when I moved here, it's amazing how much it has improved. New stores and restaurants are appearing, downtown is cleaning up beautifully, the university is expanding, and buildings are being restored. It's an exciting time to be in Portsmouth!

A new playground and safe environment for the children is absolutely necessary and deserving for the children of Portsmouth!

I moved from Portsmouth over 10 years ago but I go back to visit often. Portsmouth is still the greatest little city to raise kids and a fun place to visit. The scenery is beautiful and the people are friendly. Mound Park was the best place to hang out when we were growing up and it would be nice if the kids today could have a great playground to enjoy and have something to talk about to their kids. There's no place like home!

I am glad to see someone is finally trying to update the playground euipment I took my boys there when they were small..there is so little for children to do around Portsmouth anymore..I thought it was one of the biggest mistakes for the city not to find a way to keep Dreamland Pool open. I can remember spending every single day there in the summer our parents bought season passes and from the time the gates opened till it closed in the evenings we were there ..it kept us out of trouble and we made friends from all over the area.. We need more things like new equipment to give the kids something safe and fun to do

Mound Park is in a very nice part of town. It should be a pleasant place for families to go and unwind together. We need the new slides and swings for our kids. With the problems of Drugs in some family s we certainly need this stress releaser. People have tried over the years to keep this a safe and fun place. it was a nice park when I was growing up and it should be the same now for the kids in the area. The youth are the furture of our town. Portsmouth takes pride in its youth.

Growing up in Portmouth, I have MANY fond memories of my time spent playing at Mound Park! At the time, there was a merry-go-round that was a neighborhood favorite. Many a day did I run as fast as I could to get it spinning and then quickly jump on it. I loved that thing! We had Vacation Bible School in that park and lots of Brownie and Girl Scout outings. Many spring and summer afternoons and Saturdays, my family would take my sister and me there to play and have snowcones. I hope we can get it back up and make it a wonderful place for future generations to play and make memories of their own! Please vote for PORTSMOUTH!

Portsmouth loves to play! We never grow up here, if we're lucky and try really hard. And we do! Boys and girls become men and women but never lose their childlike fascination with the world around them. Again, if they're lucky! Children learn lessons for life in play, lessons of sharing, cooperation, friendly competition and sportsmanship. They wander the fields, climb the Appalachian foothills, trace the bottom lands of the Ohio and Scioto River valleys, and stare in awesome wonder, sharing the experience with friends and family, both in doing now and telling later. They laugh much and try to live heartily in a world filled with things they didn't make and can't control, and find the joy to play despite those things. They need more venues to play in, more theaters for the many ways in which humans play, music, acting, visual arts, orating, bouncing, bopping, batting, creating, dreaming, pretending, running, breathing deeply, hearts pounding, being whole, healthy and well-rounded for the work that earns the play. Every community needs more playgrounds, and if we don't win, we'll wish well to the one that does because we know the value of a playground anywhere humans live and that our neighbors, and we're all neighbors in the small world of the 21st century, need it too. To paraphrase someone, "If play be the food of joy, let's eat!"

Many people recall Mound Park fondly. I'd like to change the name to Horseshoe Mound Park, because that's the unique shape of the ancient earthwork there. I measured it once as being roughly 100 feet long on each side of the "U" shape, and about 100 feet across the joining section. What remains is one of two the ancient natives built here, and those only part of an extensive network. When the Europeans invaded they asked the contemporary natives what the mounds were and they said, "We don't know. They were here when we got here." Remember the Rocket structure that used to stand there? You could climb up inside it and look out from a nearly 20-foot vantage, and get a sense of the mound and the lay of the land, admire the wonderful old trees that grew there. One tree, now gone, I measured as 17 feet in circumference at about five feet up from its base. I wanted to sand the stump when they cut it down, shellac it, and count the rings, to determine how old it was, marking various rings to show the year in which world and national and state and local events of note happened while this great old tree grew. And the present playground had varied length metal pipes suspended with small swinging hammer-balls. I could play "Joy To The World" on them. Older folks may remember the croquet courts, shuffleboards, and the summer activities in the Work Projects Administration-built stone shelter house that still stands there. (I made a lanyard!) It was the site of the county children's home at one time, and I'm sure they needed to play. We all need to play. We should never grow too old or disinterested to play.

It's great to see that Portsmouth is interested in keeping their youth in good physical condition with a good playground. Hopefully there will be enough in the fund to provide some playgound equipment for Sciotoville as well. Sciotoville is close to my heart as that is where my fond childhood memories were made. The playgound at Allard Park on Harding Avenue will remain a "cherished" memory to me and I hope that future children can have them too! May Portsmouth be blessed with the grant.

Portsmouth Ohio is an old river town that has a lot of history. The city had a lot of industries/businesses and was booming. Unfortunately, Portsmouth lost a lot these industries/businesses and its population. However, during the past few years, we are seeing some progress as new restaurants, department stores, schools, etc. have been built and our college has expanded. We want to continue to progress and people of the area must start thinking positively and forget negativity. Our future is our children. Most of the children in Portsmouth do not have the opportunity as children in larger cities. Having a new playground is a start for the children of Portsmouth. Give our children hope as we continue to progress. Please vote for Portsmouth.

>>Portsmouth Earthworks >>Home » Prehistory » Places » Portsmouth Earthworks >>The Portsmouth Earthworks were constructed by the Hopewell culture (100 B.C to 500 A.D.) of prehistoric Native American people. It is a large ceremonial center located at the confluence of the Scioto and Ohio rivers. Much of the site is now encompassed by the city of Portsmouth in Scioto County, Ohio. Part of this earthwork complex extends across the Ohio River into Kentucky. Originally, the Portsmouth Earthworks included a northern section consisting of a number of circular enclosures, two large horseshoe-shaped enclosures, and three sets of parallel-walled roads leading away from this location. One set of walls went to the southwest and may have linked to a large square enclosure located on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. Another set went to the southeast where it led to the Ohio River. The walls continued on the opposite side of the river and led to a complicated circular enclosure. The third set of walls went to the northwest for an undetermined distance. >> >>There are few surviving remnants of the Portsmouth Earthworks. Of these, only Mound Park in Portsmouth is open to the general public. The City of Portsmouth park includes one of the large horseshoe-shaped enclosures. It is called Horseshoe Mound and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. >> >>You can find more information at http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org >> >> >Who is that singing at Mound Park? http://badaboo.free.fr/merryxmas.swf >

As a young kid growing up on High Street, I remember going to Mound Park daily. My twin brother and I would ride our bikes and meet up with the other kids. I remember the Rocket and the mound. I remember starting at the top of the paved path on the bike and flying down the path to the mound and ramping over the mound (didn't know we weren't suposse to play on it). As a young adult, I coached several years for the Mound Park Rams, Pee-Wee Football teams, so many memories were made. Now as Father, I still take my children there and just sit back and watch them run and play as I did. This is a special place for so many people, lets continue making memories at "OLD MOUND PARK"
